Canyon Pass at Dove Mnt, Marana, Arizona Home, 102
A language of form speaks of a simple movement that is inspired by the desert hillside in the design of the Price Residence. Deep overhangs, low building profile, and proper orientation are just a few of the regional design lessons of this residence. Earth integration and passive solar are used without compromising the complexity of the architecture. A continuous curving plane, clad in copper, greets visitors as they enter the foyer and links to the far side of the residence as it curves and rises. This circulation spine separates the private spaces from the public gathering spaces. High clerestory windows allow natural diffused day-lighting into the earth-sheltered portions of these rooms while the steep hillside blocks direct exposure. Public and exposed spaces requiring the views are located within the Western half and are elevated out of the earth to create an ample sense of space with minimal disruption to surrounding landscape.
